How to find companies that just raised funding
A company that has just raised money has a plan to spend it: new people, new tools, outside help to grow faster. If you sell anything a growing company needs, the weeks after a raise are the best time to be in touch.
Where funding shows up first
- Official filings: in many countries a raise has to be filed. In the United States, companies raising money privately file a Form D with the SEC, usually within 15 days of the first sale, naming the company, the amount and its executives. In the United Kingdom, new shares issued in a round show up at Companies House.
- Crowdfunding: equity crowdfunding platforms publish their live and closed rounds, and in the United States those raises are also filed with the SEC.
- Business loans and government support: some governments publish the loans they back and the grants they award, such as the US Small Business Administration and the EU's research funding programmes.
- Funding news, press releases and investors' own websites: usually a little later, and mostly the larger rounds.
Read the record with care
- A filing can cover a whole round over several months, and the amount may not be final.
- Not every company that files is a startup: funds and property deals file too. Check the industry and the website.
- The people listed are a good start, but find a published way to reach them, such as the company's own website.
How to approach a newly funded company
Mention the raise lightly, if at all. Founders get many "congrats on the round" emails. Talk about what they are likely to do next, such as hiring their first sales team or launching in a new market, and how you help with exactly that.
Be quick. Within a few weeks of the raise they are still choosing suppliers. Months later, the budget is spoken for.
